Aim: Seedling recruitment is a vital process for forest regeneration and is influenced by various factors such as stand composition, climate, and soil disturbance. We conducted a long‐term field experiment (18 years) to study the effects of these factors and their interactions on seedling recruitment. Location: Our study focused on five main species in boreal mixed woods of eastern Canada: trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides), paper birch (Betula papyrifera), white spruce (Picea glauca), balsam fir (Abies balsamea), and white cedar (Thuja occidentalis). Methods: Sixteen 1‐m2 seedling monitoring subplots were set up in each of seven stands originating from different wildfires (fire years ranging from 1760 to 1944), with a soil scarification treatment applied to every other subplot. Annual new seedling counts were related to growing‐season climate (mean temperature, growing degree days and drought code), scarification, and stand effects via a Bayesian generalized linear mixed model. Results: Soil scarification had a large positive effect on seedling recruitment for three species (aspen, birch and spruce). As expected, high mean temperatures during the seed production period (two years prior to seedling emergence) increased seedling recruitment for all species but aspen. Contrary to other studies, we did not find a positive effect of dry conditions during the seed production period. Furthermore, high values of growing degree days suppressed conifer seedling recruitment. Except for white cedar, basal area was weakly correlated with seedling abundance, suggesting a small number of reproductive individuals is sufficient to saturate seedling recruitment. Conclusion: Our findings underscore the importance of considering multiple factors, such as soil disturbance, climate, and stand composition, as well as their effects on different life stages when developing effective forest management strategies to promote regeneration in boreal mixed‐wood ecosystems. Hybrid aspen Populus tremula L. × Populus tremuloides Michx. is fast-growing and a potential source of biomass for bioenergy production in Europe. However, knowledge about the phytopathological risks to hybrid aspen clones, particularly about frost crack damage as a possible infection gateway of fungal infections, is scarce. Five clones, represented by 205 trees from three trials in Latvia, were studied; two wood samples (at root collar and 1.3 m height) were obtained from each tree. Wood-inhabiting fungi were isolated and identified by the morphology and sequencing of the ITS region with fungal-specific primers, and fungal communities were compared using PERMANOVA. Fungal communities from trees with stem cracks were richer in species, especially pathogens, and species richness was higher in samples collected at 1.3 m height. Plant pathogens were isolated from 52% of all samples. Soft rot-causing Alternaria and Fusarium were dominant; Alternaria was more common at the height of 1.3 m, while Fusarium was more common at the root collar. White rot fungi were isolated from less than 2% of all samples, indicating a low degree of tree infection in the 15- to 16-year-old plantations. Clonal differences were not significant for fungal communities in general; nevertheless, for the occurrence of the genus Cladosporium, clonal differences were observed. In conclusion, the differences in fungal communities in relation to stem cracks implied only indirect clonal effects on phytopathological risks, emphasizing the resistance to stem cracking as a crucial trait for the sustainability of hybrid aspen plantations. Dead wood quality is typically recorded as a biodiversity indicator and as part of forest carbon estimates, using decay classification systems. In large-scale national forest inventories (NFIs), these systems typically differ among countries. Harmonizing them would allow analyzes over broader scales and the use of larger data sets. Here, we exemplified the development of a harmonized decay classification for the NFIs of Finland, Norway, and Sweden, using wood density as an objective harmonizing criterion. We sampled 441 Scots pine, Norway spruce, birch and trembling aspen in different conditions and decay classes, measured their density and developed the harmonized classification for each species and dead wood type (standing and fallen). The assignments relied on minimizing within-class variance in wood density in the harmonized classes. Assigned into three (standing dead wood) and four (fallen dead wood) classes, the harmonization led to modest losses of information, especially in the advanced decay stages. How the original decay classes were assigned into the harmonized classes differed slightly, depending on the tree species and type. This is an advantage over the expert assessment that typically treat all species and types of dead wood the same way despite clear differences in decomposition pathways. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fire-adapted dry forests and nearby communities both need to be sustained as climate changes. Wildfires have increased in the ~25.5 million ha of dry forests in the western US, but are wildfires already more severe than historical (preindustrial) wildfires, warranting suppression, or is more fire needed? Recent research suggests that a higher percentage are more severe, but is this from more high-severity fire (≥70% mortality) or simply less lower-severity fire? To resolve this question, I compared government fire-severity data from 2000–2020 with corresponding government Landfire historical data, representing the last few centuries. The fire rotation (expected time to burn across an area of interest) for high-severity fire was 477 years recently versus 255 years historically, a deficit, not a surplus. High-severity fire would need to increase 1.9 times to equal historical rates. Thus, reducing high-severity fire through fuel reductions is fire suppression, which has significant well-known adverse ecological impacts. These include reductions in (1) natural burn patches, snags, and non-forest openings, that favor diverse fire-adapted species, and (2) landscape heterogeneity that can limit future disturbances and enhance landscape ecological processes. Even larger deficits were in moderate (4.4 times) and low (5.8 times) fire severities. However, if only these lower severities were restored, the high-severity percentage would correspondingly be reduced to low levels. All fire severities are needed to provide a variety of post-fire settings that favor a broad suite of selection pressures and adaptations to emerging climate. This paper shows that to sustain and adapt dry forests and nearby communities to fire and climate change, the billions spent on fuel reductions to reduce high-severity fire can be redirected to protecting the built environment, fostering both safe and sustainable dry forests and human communities. Oystershell scale (OSS; Lepidosaphes ulmi L.) is an invasive insect that threatens sustainability of aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in the southwestern United States. OSS invasions have created challenges for land managers tasked with maintaining healthy aspen ecosystems for the ecological, economic, and aesthetic benefits they provide. Active management is required to suppress OSS populations and mitigate damage to aspen ecosystems, but before management strategies can be implemented, critical knowledge gaps about OSS biology and ecology must be filled.This study sought to fill these gaps by addressing 3 questions: (i) What is the short-term rate of aspen mortality in OSS-infested stands in northern Arizona, USA? (ii) What are the short-term rates of OSS population growth on trees and OSS spread among trees in aspen stands? (iii) What is the phenology of OSS on aspen and does climate influence phenology? We observed high levels of aspen mortality (annual mortality rate = 10.4%) and found that OSS spread rapidly within stands (annual spread rate = 10–12.3%). We found first, second, and young third instars throughout the year and observed 2 waves of first instars (i.e., crawlers), one throughout the summer and a second in mid-winter. The first wave appeared to be driven by warming seasonal temperatures, but the cause of the second wave is unknown and might represent a second generation. We provide recommendations for future OSS research, including suggestions for more precise quantification of OSS phenology, and discuss how our results can inform management of OSS and invaded aspen ecosystems. Abstract Insectivorous birds have ecologically important effects on prey abundance, behavior, and evolution, and through top‐down control, birds indirectly reduce herbivory and promote plant growth. While several studies sought to characterize biogeographic patterns in top‐down control by birds, variation in bird predation along elevational gradients is not well characterized in terms of both its commonness and the mechanisms underlying such variation. Here, we characterized variation in bird predation along a 700‐m montane elevation gradient using artificial clay caterpillars, assessing the roles of variation in aridity, other elevational effects not associated with aridity (e.g., most notably growing season length), and bird abundance and diversity. Multivariate models revealed increasing attack rates with aridity (when controlling for the effects of elevation) and elevation (when controlling for aridity). Because aridity declines with elevation, elevational patterns were not detectable in a univariate analysis. Bird abundance (but not diversity) decreased with elevation (but not aridity) and did not provide an explanation for our results, suggesting that the underlying mechanisms were behaviorally based. We speculate that the declining abundance of insect prey with elevation and aridity leads to increased bird foraging efforts and thus the likelihood of attacking clay caterpillars. If widespread, these dynamics have important consequences for both the interpretation of predation bioassays generally and our understanding of the multivariate drivers of variation in top‐down control by predators and predation risks experienced by prey.

Edge habitats resulting from the construction and maintenance of forest roads favour pioneer, shade-intolerant and disturbance-adapted plant species. The effect of roads on the spread of non-native species has been frequently studied, but few studies have focused upon their effects on native tree species. We studied the effect of forest roads on the expansion dynamics of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) in a boreal forest landscape of eastern Canada. We determined whether roads act as a habitat and dispersal corridor for trembling aspen, and whether populations that established along roads act as a starting point for aspen expansion into adjacent stands. We evaluated the effect of forest roads on the distribution of trembling aspen by surveying the vegetation along 694 km of roads. In 19 stands, we compared the density and age of individuals in 100 m transects established parallel and perpendicular to roads, to determine the role of roads. Trembling aspen is abundant along the forest road network. Forest roads act sometimes as habitat corridors for trembling aspen, but their effects on its density extend only over a short distance (10 m) on each side of the roads. The forest roads did not act as a starting point for the expansion of trembling aspen into adjacent stands. Forest roads are particularly favourable habitats for trembling aspen. Although roads did not act as a starting point for aspen dispersal away from roads, these habitats would be vulnerable to invasion following a disturbance that would reduce the thickness of the organic layer.

Climate change poses a serious risk to sustainable forest management, particularly in boreal forests where natural disturbances have been projected to become more severe. In three Quebec boreal forest management units, biomass carbon storage under various climate change and management scenarios was projected over 300 years (2010–2310) with a process-based dynamic landscape model (PnET-succession for Landis-II). Several strategies varying in their use of partial cuts and clear cuts, including business as usual (BAU) (clear-cut applied on more than 95% of the managed area), were tested and compared to conservation scenarios (no-harvest). Based on simulation results at the landscape scale, the clearcut-based scenarios such as BAU could result in a decrease of biomass carbon stock by 10 tC ha−1 yr−1 compared to the natural scenario. However, this reduction in carbon stock could be offset in the long term through changes in composition, as clearcut systems promote the expansion of trembling aspen and white birch. In contrast, the use of strategies based on partial cuts on more than 75% or 50% of the managed area was closer to or better than the natural scenario and resulted in greater coniferous cover retention. These strategies seemed to be the best to maximize and stabilize biomass carbon storage and ensure wood supply under different climate change scenarios, yet they would require further access and appropriate infrastructure. Furthermore, these strategies could maintain species compositions and age structures similar to natural scenarios, and thus may consequently help achieve forest ecosystem-based management targets. Much remains unknown regarding the linkages between forest structure and microclimate as they regulate detrital decomposition. In this study, we use a factorial field experiment that included canopy gap creation and downed woody material (DW) additions conducted in a mature northern hardwood forest. Our objectives were to (1) test the individual and combined effects of canopy gaps and DW additions on detrital mass loss; (2) determine whether the factors regulating mass loss are similar among leaf litter, experimental wood stakes, and coarse DW; and (3) assess the microclimatic variables that most strongly influence mass loss of these detrital types. After three years, leaf litter mass loss within gaps, without or with DW additions, was significantly greater than that of any non-gap treatments. Mass loss of stakes was significantly greater in gaps, intermediate in gaps with DW additions, and lowest in non-gap treatments. Mass loss of wood stakes after 8 years varied by species, with aspen (Populus tremuloides) losing up to 93% and sugar maple (Acer saccharum) up to 82% of its original mass. Fourteen years following treatment, the experimental logs lost 55–70% of their original mass, with ash (Fraxinus spp.) decaying faster than maple. Gap creation and DW additions individually, but not in combination, increased mass loss of coarse DW. For most substrates tested, gaps were consistently and positively related to mass loss, with approximately 10% greater mass loss in gaps compared to non-gaps. The presence of deadwood strongly moderated litter decomposition, had minimal effect on small woody substrates in the short-term after gap creation, but was influential on longer-term decay patterns of larger DW. Predictive models for each substrate varied, though shared some similar drivers. Litter mass loss was positively correlated to increasing gap size, canopy openness, and soil moisture. Stake mass loss was positively correlated to increasing gap size and canopy openness for maple, but soil temperature for aspen. Mass loss for logs was driven by increasing DW volume and gap size for ash, but soil temperature for maple. Smaller-sized materials may be more sensitive to environmental conditions as opposed to logs for which microclimatic influence may lag or remain a minor driver for at least the initial decade of decomposition. Regardless of substrate type, the findings of this work highlight the potential for greater rates of detrital mass loss from forest systems under predicted increases in canopy disturbance rates with climate change and invasive insects and diseases. Using multi-scale trembling aspen tree-ring width data from Alberta, we show that scaling has a profound influence on dendroecological inferencing. At all scales of sampling, there is a significant climatological signal whose strength is nevertheless superseded by the pervasive effect of insect herbivory. At the smallest spatial scale, 20 km × 20 km, we demonstrate a quasi-periodic pattern of sharp growth reductions and the existence of negative spatial correlations among successive outbreaks. At the intermediate spatial scale of 20 km × 80 km, we show that the period 1930–1963 was marked by extremely low correlations in aspen ring widths, with much higher correlations occurring both before and after, despite high variance in precipitation that might have caused ring widths to correlate under moisture limitation. At the largest spatial scale of the entire province, aspen ring widths in the boreal forest became decorrelated abruptly in 1916, after cycling synchronously for the previous 80 years. This occurred despite a warming climate that heightened moisture limitation. Something in the environment prevents some outbreak cycles from rising to maximum intensity and from spreading to maximum extent. Intraspecific genetic variation in foundation species such as aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) shapes their impact on forest structure and function. Identifying genes underlying ecologically important traits is key to understanding that impact. Previous studies, using single‐locus genome‐wide association (GWA) analyses to identify candidate genes, have identified fewer genes than anticipated for highly heritable quantitative traits. Mounting evidence suggests that polygenic control of quantitative traits is largely responsible for this "missing heritability" phenomenon. Our research characterized the genetic architecture of 30 ecologically important traits using a common garden of aspen through genomic and transcriptomic analyses. A multilocus association model revealed that most traits displayed a highly polygenic architecture, with most variation explained by loci with small effects (likely below the detection levels of single‐locus GWA methods). Consistent with a polygenic architecture, our single‐locus GWA analyses found only 38 significant SNPs in 22 genes across 15 traits. Next, we used differential expression analysis on a subset of aspen genets with divergent concentrations of salicinoid phenolic glycosides (key defense traits). This complementary method to traditional GWA discovered 1243 differentially expressed genes for a polygenic trait. Soft clustering analysis revealed three gene clusters (241 candidate genes) involved in secondary metabolite biosynthesis and regulation. Our work reveals that ecologically important traits governing higher‐order community‐ and ecosystem‐level attributes of a foundation forest tree species have complex underlying genetic structures and will require methods beyond traditional GWA analyses to unravel. Roads are known to alter environmental conditions and the composition of road edge plant communities, particularly when exogenous materials are used as road surfacing. In this study, we evaluate the impact of gravel roads on the organic layer thickness (OLT) and aspen distribution in a boreal forest landscape of Eastern Canada. The OLT and aspen distribution were compared at different distances from the roads (0 m, 10 m, and >10 m) to determine whether a reduction in the OLT along the roads could explain the distribution of aspen along the road network, and in particular the role of the roads as habitat corridors. In addition, germination tests were carried out to determine whether mineral soil from the roads could promote aspen establishment, by comparing the germination rate of substrates consisting only of mineral soil or mosses, and substrates consisting of mosses covered with 0.5 cm or 2 cm of mineral soil. The presence of aspen in the study landscape is limited by thick organic deposits (≥50 cm). However, the thickness of these deposits is reduced to approximately 10 cm at the edges of gravel roads, in part by the transport of mineral soil from the roads. Data collected over a 30-year period from an experiment replicated across 21 locations in western Canada are used to explore the effects of precommercial thinning of trembling aspen to a range of densities in combination with three initial white spruce densities on tree growth and stand dynamics. Increasing differentiation amongst the 15 treatments was observed with age after thinning for both spruce and aspen responses. Spruce height and diameter declined with increasing aspen density. At age 10 spruce diameter with no aspen was 1.5× that of spruce in unthinned while it was 2.6× that of spruce in unthinned at age 28. Following thinning aspen DBH and crown width declined with increasing density of retained aspen while slenderness and height to crown base of aspen increased. Thinning to 1500 aspen·ha−1 resulted in aspen DBH that was 22% larger relative to the unthinned at age 28. Spruce volume and stemwood biomass at age 90, estimated using the Mixedwood Growth Model (MGM21), declined with increasing initial aspen density, with the complete removal of aspen resulting in nearly double the spruce volume of unthinned plots. However, total stand volume, total stand biomass, and stemwood carbon at age 90 are predicted to be largest in mixed stands with aspen densities of 1500 stems·ha−1 or higher. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Declining spring snowpack is expected to have widespread effects on montane and subalpine forests in western North America and across the globe. However, the effect of this forcing at the species and hillslope scale are difficult to predict from remote sensing or eddy covariance. Here, we present data from a network of sap velocity sensors and xylem water isotope measurements from three common subalpine tree species (Picea engelmannii, Abies lasiocarpa, Populus tremuloides) across a hillslope transect in a subalpine watershed in the Upper Colorado River Basin. We use these data to compare tree- and stand-level responses to the historically high spring snowpack but low summer rainfall of 2019 against the low spring snowpacks but high summer rains of 2021 and 2022. From the sap velocity data, we found that only 40 % of the trees showed an increase in cumulative transpiration in response to the large snowpack year (2019), illustrating the absence of a common response to a major decline in snowpack. The trees that benefited from the large snow year were all found in dense canopy stands – irrespective of species – while trees in open canopy stands were more active during the years with modest snow and higher summer rains. This pattern reflects how persistent access to soil moisture recharged by snowmelt in topographically-mediated convergence zones shapes stand density. These locally dense canopies also experience high levels of summer rainfall interception that reduce summer precipitation inputs to the soil perpetuating their greater sensitivity to snowmelt inputs. The results illustrate that the progression towards a low snowpack future will manifest at the sub-hillslope scale in dense stands with significant rainfall interception and high water demands reflecting their historical reliance on snowmelt water. In this study, five types of Aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx) strands with different widths and percentages were mixed to prepare oriented strand board (OSB) panels and their impacts on the internal bonding strength (IB), stiffness (MOE), and bending strength (MOR) of OSB were investigated. The results showed that strands with different widths at different ratios showed a significant effect on the manufacture process and qualities of the obtained OSB. The influence mechanisms of the width combination of strands on the performance of OSB was also revealed. This study could provide references for further improving the quality of OSB products, improving resource utilization, reducing the carbon footprint of wood-based panel production and reducing manufacturing costs. Alternative states defined by tree‐canopy dominance result in different ecosystem functioning and shape habitat conditions for the understory vegetation. One example in the boreal forest is the alternation between broadleaf deciduous and coniferous forests. Disturbances related to natural fires and human land uses have produced changes in tree‐canopy dominance in the boreal region where coniferous forests change to broadleaved forests, affecting understory community dynamics and their related ecosystem processes and functions. To analyze the factors driving changes in understory vegetation and the resistance of its vegetation to shifts between alternative states, we compared the effects of changes in the system between two contrasting boreal forest types (black spruce vs. trembling aspen) in adjacent stands with similar topoedaphic conditions. We performed a 5‐year in situ experiment using alternative states as a theoretical framework including two approaches: (1) the ecosystem approach, manipulating environmental conditions of light, litter, and nutrients in each forest type to determine the main mechanisms associated with tree‐canopy dominance that affect the diversity and composition of understory communities; and (2) the community approach, physically exchanging understory communities between alternative states, to determine their resistance under a new tree‐canopy dominance through time, as well as the resilience of the forest understory after a small‐scale disturbance. Results indicate that the understory vegetation of trembling aspen forests were resistant through time both after changes in local conditions in the ecosystem approach and in the new black spruce‐dominated alternative state in the community approach. In contrast, mosses and ericaceous plants that typically dominate the forest floor of black spruce forests were negatively affected by the physical effect of broadleaf litter addition in our ecosystem approach and they were not resistant when transplanted to trembling aspen forests in the community approach, as they decreased in abundance and were invaded by aspen understory community species over time. The understory vegetation is a key forest ecosystem driver that can contribute to maintain the resilience of the boreal system and help to preserve their ecosystem services, which is a key aspect to consider in forest management faced with the effects of climate change. Boreal mixed forests of trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) and white spruce (Picea glauca) can provide higher outputs of many ecosystem goods and services, combined with resilience for changing environmental conditions. In this study, we examine the growth of white spruce and aspen over a range of stand compositions created by spot and broadcast treatments of broadleaves using manual and chemical means, aspen spacing, and untreated control. Twenty-two growing seasons postharvest, treatment responses created a range of broadleaf densities and spatial arrangements, reflected in significant differences in heights and diameters of the spruce mixedwood component. At this early seral stage, treatments have generated diversity in both tree species composition and stand structure. Modeling of the stand structures created by the different treatments provided outcomes ranging from pure conifer to broadleaf dominated when assessed by merchantable volumes. Broadleaf manipulations changed the relative proportion of spruce and broadleaf species in a mixture, achieving a variety of potential landscape and stand-level goals. Treatment differences were often not statistically significant until at least 16 years after stand initiation. Monitoring the achievement of mixedwood management goals will require longer time periods than currently employed for broadleaf or conifer monocultures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The American bison (Bison bison) is a species that strongly interacts with its environment, yet the effects of this large herbivore on quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides) have received little study. We documented bison breaking the stems of aspen saplings (young aspen >2 m tall and ≤5 cm in diameter at breast height) and examined the extent of this effect in northern Yellowstone National Park (YNP). Low densities of Rocky Mountain elk (Cervus canadensis) after about 2004 created conditions conducive for new aspen recruitment in YNP's northern ungulate winter range (northern range). We sampled aspen saplings at local and landscape scales, using random sampling plots in 87 randomly selected aspen stands. Across the YNP northern range, we found that 18% of sapling stems had been broken. The causal attribution to bison was supported by multiple lines of evidence: (1) most broken saplings were in areas of high bison and low elk density; (2) saplings were broken in summer when elk were not foraging on them; (3) we directly observed bison breaking aspen saplings; and (4) mixed‐effects modeling showed a positive association between scat density of bison and the proportion of saplings broken. In a stand heavily used by bison, most aspen saplings had been broken, and portions of the stand were cleared of saplings that were present in previous sampling in 2012. Bison numbers increased more than fourfold between 2004 and 2015, and their ecosystem effects have similarly increased, limiting and in some places reversing the nascent aspen recovery. This situation is further complicated by political constraints that prevent bison from dispersing to areas outside the park. Thus, one important conservation goal, the preservation of bison, is affecting another long‐term conservation goal, the recovery of aspen and other deciduous woody species in northern Yellowstone. Purpose: Natural and anthropogenic causes have produced changes in tree dominance from coniferous to broadleaf deciduous forests, generating shifts in litter inputs and plant understory composition. The impact of changes in canopy-associated factors on belowground microbial communities remain poorly understood. The objective of this study was to better understand how abiotic and biotic factors in black spruce and trembling aspen forests shape soil microbial community structure. Methods: With high throughput sequencing, we first analyzed differences in microbial communities between microhabitats (tree phyllosphere vs. soil microbiome) and forest types (black spruce vs. trembling aspen). Second, we analyzed how shifts in factors related to each forest type (litter deposition and understory vegetation) affected soil microbial community composition. Results: We found a high microhabitat specificity of bacterial communities interacting with forest type. Shifts in litter deposition and understory vegetation between forest types did not influence microbial community composition, but the legacy effects of each forest type defined soil bacterial and fungal communities. Fungal community composition was more strongly influenced by forest type compared with bacterial communities, and both were correlated with several soil physicochemical properties that differed among forest types. Conclusion: This study expands our knowledge of the microbial composition of tree phyllosphere and soil microbial communities in black spruce and trembling aspen forests and their correlation with abiotic and biotic factors in each forest type. Our study demonstrates the resistance of microorganisms to variation in canopy-related factors and the importance of legacy effects of forest type in defining soil microbial community composition. Summary: Intraspecific variation in functional traits may mediate tree species' drought resistance, yet whether trait variation is due to genotype (G), environment (E), or G×E interactions remains unknown. Understanding the drivers of intraspecific trait variation and whether variation mediates drought response can improve predictions of species' response to future drought.Using populations of quaking aspen spanning a climate gradient, we investigated intraspecific variation in functional traits in the field as well as the influence of G and E among propagules in a common garden. We also tested for trait‐mediated trade‐offs in growth and drought stress tolerance.We observed intraspecific trait variation among the populations, yet this variation did not necessarily translate to higher drought stress tolerance in hotter/drier populations. Additionally, plasticity in the common garden was low, especially in propagules derived from the hottest/driest population. We found no growth–drought stress tolerance trade‐offs and few traits exhibited significant relationships with mortality in the natural populations, suggesting that intraspecific trait variation among the traits measured did not strongly mediate responses to drought stress.Our results highlight the limits of trait‐mediated responses to drought stress and the complex G×E interactions that may underlie drought stress tolerance variation in forests in dry environments. Summary: Spatiotemporal patterns of phenology may be affected by mosaics of environmental and genetic variation. Environmental drivers may have temporally lagged impacts, but patterns and mechanisms remain poorly known.We combine multiple genomic, remotely sensed, and physically modeled datasets to determine the spatiotemporal patterns and drivers of canopy phenology in quaking aspen, a widespread clonal dioecious tree species with diploid and triploid cytotypes.We show that over 391 km2 of southwestern Colorado: greenup date, greendown date, and growing season length vary by weeks and differ across sexes, cytotypes, and genotypes; phenology has high phenotypic plasticity and heritabilities of 31–61% (interquartile range); and snowmelt date, soil moisture, and air temperature predict phenology, at temporal lags of up to 3 yr.Our study shows that lagged environmental effects are needed to explain phenological variation and that the effect of cytotype on phenology is obscured by its correlation with topography. As 21st‐century climate and disturbance dynamics depart from historic baselines, ecosystem resilience is uncertain. Multiple drivers are changing simultaneously, and interactions among drivers could amplify ecosystem vulnerability to change. Subalpine forests in Greater Yellowstone (Northern Rocky Mountains, USA) were historically resilient to infrequent (100–300 year), severe fire. We sampled paired short‐interval (<30‐year) and long‐interval (>125‐year) post‐fire plots most recently burned between 1988 and 2018 to address two questions: (1) How do short‐interval fire, climate, topography, and distance to unburned live forest edge interact to affect post‐fire forest regeneration? (2) How do forest biomass and fuels vary following short‐interval versus long‐interval severe fires? Mean post‐fire live tree stem density was an order of magnitude lower following short‐interval versus long‐interval fires (3240 vs. 28,741 stems ha−1, respectively). Differences between paired plots were amplified at longer distances to live forest edge. Surprisingly, warmer–drier climate was associated with higher seedling densities even after short‐interval fire, likely relating to regional variation in serotiny of lodgepole pine (Pinus contorta var. latifolia). Unlike conifers, density of aspen (Populus tremuloides), a deciduous resprouter, increased with short‐interval versus long‐interval fires (mean 384 vs. 62 stems ha−1, respectively). Live biomass and canopy fuels remained low nearly 30 years after short‐interval fire, in contrast with rapid recovery after long‐interval fire, suggesting that future burn severity may be reduced for several decades following reburns. Short‐interval plots also had half as much dead woody biomass compared with long‐interval plots (60 vs. 121 Mg ha−1), primarily due to the absence of large snags. Our results suggest differences in tree regeneration following short‐interval versus long‐interval fires will be especially pronounced where serotiny was high historically. Propagule limitation will also interact with short‐interval fires to diminish tree regeneration but lessen subsequent burn severity. Disturbances are ubiquitous in ecological systems, and species have evolved a range of strategies to resist or rebound following disturbance. Understanding how the presence and complementarity of regeneration traits will affect community responses to disturbance is increasingly urgent as disturbance regimes shift beyond their historical ranges of variability. We define "disturbance niche" as a species' fitness across a range of disturbance sizes and frequencies that can reflect the fundamental or realized niche, that is, whether the species occurs alone or with other species. We developed a model of intermediate complexity (i.e., a Goldilocks model) to infer the disturbance niche. We parameterized the model for subalpine forests in Yellowstone National Park (USA) adapted to infrequent stand‐replacing fires and included the three major tree‐regeneration strategies: (1) obligate seeders that rely on ex situ seeding into burned areas (non‐serotinous lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifola), (2) obligate seeders that depend on in situ seedbanks (serotinous lodgepole pine, Pinus contorta var. latifola), and (3) species that can resprout from surviving roots following fire (quaking aspen, Populus tremuloides). Our results showed which regeneration strategies increase or decrease in prevalence as fire rotation declines. Non‐serotinous pines were extirpated when fire rotation was below 50 years in a monoculture and 100 years in a mixed forest; serotinous pines were extirpated when fire rotation was below 20 years; and aspen was extirpated when fire rotation fell below 6 years. The fundamental and realized disturbance niches pinpointed the key mechanisms limiting regeneration for each strategy, namely, increasing fire size for non‐serotinous pine (ex situ seeders), decreasing fire frequency for serotinous pine (in situ seeders), and interspecific competition for aspen (resprouters). In a mixed forest, the three regeneration strategies were complementary and each dominated at different combinations of fire size and frequency. Consequently, diversity of regeneration strategies enhanced forest resilience to declining fire rotations. Despite its simplicity, our Goldilocks model produced realistic dynamics and could be readily adapted to other disturbance‐prone ecosystems to explore the generality of these results. Condensed tannins (CTs) are abundant, ecologically-relevant secondary metabolites in many plants, which respond to variables associated with anthropogenic environmental change. While many studies have reported how genetic and environmental factors affect CT concentrations, few have explored how they influence CT molecular structure. Here, using trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) as a model organism, we report how foliar CT concentrations, polymer sizes, representation of procyanidins and prodelphinidins, and stereochemistry vary in response to changes in air temperature (warming and freeze damage), air composition (elevated CO2 and O3), soil quality (nutrients and microbiome), and herbivory (mammal and lepidopteran). Use of multiple aspen genotypes enabled assessment of genetic influences on aspen CTs. CT concentration and composition were analyzed by thiolysis-ultra high performance liquid chromatography/mass spectrometry in archived leaf samples from prior experiments. All environmental variables explored except for soil microbiome influenced both CT quantity and quality, with climate factors appearing to have larger effect magnitudes than herbivory. Climate, soil, and herbivory effects varied among genotypes, while air composition effects were consistent across genotypes. Considering that CT properties (concentrations and molecular structures) mediate functions at the organismal through ecosystem scales, intraspecific variation in responses of CT properties to environmental factors could provide a pathway through which environmental change exerts selective pressure on Populus populations. Future studies are needed to identify the molecular-level mechanisms by which environmental factors influence CT concentrations and structures, and to establish their ecological and evolutionary significance. Trembling aspen (Populus tremuloides) is arguably the most important deciduous tree species in the Intermountain West of North America. There, as elsewhere in its range, aspen exhibits remarkable genetic variation in observable traits such as morphology and phenology. In contrast to Great Lakes populations, however, relatively little is known about phytochemical variation in western aspen. This survey of phytochemistry in western aspen was undertaken to assess how chemical expression varies among genotypes, cytotypes (diploid vs. triploid), and populations, and in response to development and mammalian browsing. We measured levels of foliar nitrogen, salicinoid phenolic glycosides (SPGs) and condensed tannins (CTs), as those constituents influence organismal interactions and ecosystem processes. Results revealed striking genotypic variation and considerable population variation, but minimal cytotype variation, in phytochemistry of western aspen. Levels of SPGs and nitrogen declined, whereas levels of CTs increased, with tree age. Browsed ramets had much higher levels of SPGs, and lower levels of CTs, than unbrowsed ramets of the same genotype. We then evaluated how composite chemical profiles of western aspen differ from those of Great Lakes aspen (assessed in earlier research). Interestingly, mature western aspen trees maintain much higher levels of SPGs, and lower levels of CTs, than Great Lakes aspen. Phenotypic variation in chemical composition of aspen – a foundation species – in the Intermountain West likely has important consequences for organismal interactions and forest ecosystem dynamics. Climate change is causing a shift to earlier spring budburst in deciduous temperate trees, which may predispose them to greater risk of damage from growing season frosts. Populus tremuloides may be particularly vulnerable to growing season frosts, which can defoliate entire canopies and damage woody tissue. These growing season frost events may shift in frequency under continued climate change and alter a disturbance regime that disproportionately impacts deciduous, cold-sensitive vegetation. We used Populus tremuloides tree cores from 14 sites across the montane and subalpine forests of Utah, USA, to identify characteristic tree rings, namely 'white rings', associated with growing season frost damage over the period 1767–2016. Early growing season frost was estimated using a frost intensity index using local data sourced from 22 long-term weather stations and was correlated with white ring occurrence. Over the last 150 years, the frequency of white rings was between 5 and 6% of all years. Growing season frost occurrence was similar in northern and southern Utah and highly synchronous across stands indicating widespread defoliation. Populus tremuloides radial growth declined nearly 40% during years of frost-associated defoliation. Our results highlight a severe disturbance that disproportionately impacts Populus tremuloides. Striving for climate neutrality and wider implementation of climate change mitigation measures including tree introduction in agricultural land, request for approaches and general allometric models for estimating carbon (C) stock in tree above-ground biomass (AGB) based on relatively easily obtainable remote sensing data is increasing. Here, we present estimates of individual trees' crown diameters (CDs) for Betula pendula Roth (B. pendula) and Populus tremuloides Michx. × Populus tremula L. (P. tremuloides × P. tremula) in 11-year-old tree plantations (tree height ranged up to 12.8 and 18.1 m, respectively) in the hemiboreal region of Europe (in Latvia). Individual trees' CDs were measured using a drone orthophoto map. Afterwards, linear equations were developed to predict individual trees' stem diameters at breast height (DBHs) and, consequently, tree AGB (which was then converted to C stock) from remote-sensed tree CD data. RMSEs of the prediction models of tree stem DBH were in the ranges of 1.87–2.12 cm for B. pendula and 2.50–3.12 cm for P. tremuloides × P. tremula. This demonstrated approach is applicable to carry out, for instance, a self-assessment and approximate C stock in the AGB of selected tree species by land owners, managers, and other implementers of climate change mitigation measures. For a comprehensive understanding of the surface roughness of wood substrates after grinding and its influence on the construction of surface structural color layers (SCLs) and the effect of color production, four typical diffuse-porous wood species were investigated by grinding with abrasive belts of different grits. The results indicated that an abrasive belt of suitable grit was required to form the flattest surface for different wood species. Notably, 400-grit abrasive belts can be used for quaking aspen (QA) and yellow poplar (YP) wood, while 320-grit abrasive belts can be used for kang duan (KD) and hard maple (HM) wood for the grinding process. When the grit of the belt was 80–240, the surface roughness of the wood was high, and the gully contour was mainly determined by the machining marks created by the grits during the cutting process. When the SCLs were constructed on these wood samples, the grooves formed by grit grinding caused the emulsion to overflow on the surface of the wood, thus preventing the formation of well-ordered SCLs with excellent color production. In contrast, when the grit of the abrasive belts was increased to the range of 320–800, the main factors affecting the roughness of the wood surface led to the anatomical structural features. Vessels, in particular, not only affected the surface roughness of the wood but also served as a major path for emulsion flow. The number, diameter, and patency of vessels per unit area were the main factors affecting the SCL's construction and decoration effect on wood surfaces. This study clarifies that the roughness of the wood surface after the grinding process is jointly influenced by the grit of the abrasive belt and the wood's anatomical structure. In this study, the PtWRKY33 gene sequence was cloned by PCR from cDNA, and systematic evolutionary analysis was performed. qRT–PCR was performed to measure the expression of the PtWRKY33 gene in the roots, stems and leaves of Populus tremuloides under drought and saline stresses, and overexpression vectors were constructed and genetically transformed into tobacco. The results showed that the WRKY transcription factors of Populus trichocarpa, Populus euphratica and Populus alba were in the same branch and were closely related to each other. Treating poplar seedlings with 20% PEG6000 solution to simulate drought stress showed that expression of the PtWRKY33 gene was induced and increased 1.89 times, 3.45 times and 11.6 times in leaves, stems and roots. The relative expression of the PtWRKY33 gene was slower to respond to 150 mM NaCl treatment but was nonetheless induced. At 48 h, the increase was 1–3 times in leaves, stems and roots, respectively. NaHCO3 (60 mM) was used to treat poplar seedlings with alkaline salt stress; the results indicated that the PtWRKY33 gene was sensitive to NaHCO3 stress treatment, and that its relative expression was significantly increased and increased 10.51 times (24 h), 6.56 times (6 h) and 5.16 times (24 h) in leaves, stems and roots, respectively. In this study, we found that NaCl and NaHCO3 stress treatments were able to induce an increase in the expression of the NtSOD1 and NtAPX2 genes using qRT–PCR, and the significant increase in expression under the treatments compared with WT may be caused by overexpression of the PtWRKY33 gene. Overexpression of the PtWRKY33 gene in tobacco enhanced the antioxidant stress capacity and improved the salinity tolerance of transgenic tobacco. Species mixtures have been widely reported to increase aboveground productivity; however, how tree species mixtures affect root systems in natural forests remains unclear. We hypothesize that mixtures have a greater fine root length compared to single species‐dominated stands to support their greater productivity.Here, we collected monthly root images from the minirhizotrons installed in 18 stands either dominated by Populus tremuloides, Pinus banksiana, and their mixtures for three years (2015–2017) in post‐fire boreal forests of two stand ages (8 and 34 years old) to test our hypotheses.We found that the fine root length was higher in mixtures than in single species‐dominated stands, and the magnitude of mixture effects was greater in the 34‐ than in the 8‐year‐old stands in the third year. The mixture effects on fine root length revealed a positive relationship with forest net primary productivity. Root length production, which is the growth of new roots within a year, was not affected by tree species mixtures except for the 8‐year‐old stand in 2015. Tree species mixtures did not affect root length turnover. Root length and root biomass were not significantly correlated at stand level.Synthesis. Our results show that tree species mixtures positively affect fine root length, with that positive effect increasing with stand development in the studied natural forests. Our results suggest that the greater root length in species mixtures supported the greater forest productivity in species mixtures as the greater root length benefits plant uptake of nutrients and water. Purpose: Most plants interact with soil biota that positively or negatively affect seedling performance. These plant-soil feedbacks (PSFs) can strongly affect recruitment, potentially for years after death. We tested whether PSFs persisted following death for Populus tremuloides Michx. (aspen) and if these effects were environment dependent using soils collected from live and dead aspen and heterospecific Picea glauca (Moench) Voss in 24 stands across two ecosystems. Methods: We conducted a greenhouse experiment using soils from 24 aspen stands. At each stand, we collected soil from three trees of each tree type and used live and sterilized versions of these soils to inoculate aspen seedlings. We then recorded mortality and growth of the seedlings over three months. Results: Live inocula reduced aspen survival and growth relative to sterilized inocula, suggesting that pathogens drive PSF. Plant responses to live and dead aspen inocula were correlated across environments; however, responses to aspen and heterospecific Picea inocula were uncorrelated, suggesting that specialized pathogens may drive PSF. Conclusions: Pathogen-driven negative PSFs can persist for multiple years irrespective of the environment, potentially limiting the regeneration of aspen stands following dieback. Resilience of plant communities to disturbance is supported by multiple mechanisms, including ecological legacies affecting propagule availability, species' environmental tolerances, and biotic interactions. Understanding the relative importance of these mechanisms for plant community resilience supports predictions of where and how resilience will be altered with disturbance. We tested mechanisms underlying resilience of forests dominated by black spruce (Picea mariana) to fire disturbance across a heterogeneous forest landscape in the Northwest Territories, Canada. We combined surveys of naturally regenerating seedlings at 219 burned plots with experimental manipulations of ecological legacies via seed addition of four tree species and vertebrate exclosures to limit granivory and herbivory at 30 plots varying in moisture and fire severity. Black spruce recovery was greatest where it dominated pre-fire, at wet sites with deep residual soil organic layers, and fire conditions of low soil or canopy combustion and longer return intervals. Experimental addition of seed indicated all species were seed-limited, emphasizing the importance of propagule legacies. Black spruce and birch (Betula papyrifera) recruitment were enhanced with vertebrate exclusion. Our combination of observational and experimental studies demonstrates black spruce is vulnerable to effects of increased fire activity that erode ecological legacies. Moreover, black spruce relies on wet areas with deep soil organic layers where other species are less competitive. However, other species can colonize these areas if enough seed is available or soil moisture is altered by climate change. Host affiliation and entomopathogenic infections play a major role in shaping population dynamics of the forest tent caterpillar (FTC), Malacosoma disstria Hübner (Lepidoptera: Lasiocampidae). The effect of these individual factors has been studied, but it is unknown whether interactions between these factors significantly impact FTC life history traits. In the laboratory, we investigated a tritrophic interaction among larval diet, larval microsporidian infection, and FTC life history traits. Larvae were reared on foliage of trembling aspen, Populus tremuloides Michx (Malpighiales: Salicaceae) or sugar maple, Acer saccharum Marshall (Sapindales: Sapindaceae), or an artificial diet. Natural levels of microsporidian infection were assessed through microscopy and categorized as none (0 spores), low (1–100 spores), or high (>100 spores). Microsporidian infection and larval diet individually, but not interactively, impacted FTC life history traits. Moths with high infection had smaller wings, but infection did not increase the probability of wing malformations. Wings of FTC reared on fresh maple foliage were significantly smaller, had a higher probability of wing malformation, and a lower likelihood of cocoon production than FTC reared on other diets, but displayed higher overall survival. While microsporidian infection did not influence FTC-diet interactions, we provide further evidence on how these main effects may individually contribute to shaping FTC adult life history traits, and, ultimately, cyclical population dynamics. The mixed emulsion of P(St-MMA-AA) colloidal microspheres doped with black substances in three commercial inks (pen ink, wood color essence, propylene pigment) was coated on the wood surface. The dried colloidal microspheres self-assembled on the wood surface to form a three-dimensional photonic crystal coating. The influence of the coating on the optical properties of the wood surface was analyzed, and the influence of the type, concentration and drying temperature of the black substance on the structural color coating was explored. When three kinds of commercial black ink were mixed with colloidal microsphere emulsion to obtain photonic crystals on the wood surface, the transmitted light and the scattered light outside the photonic band gap were absorbed by black ink, which effectively reduced the light scattering inside the crystal and significantly enhanced the depth of the photonic crystal structure color. Herbivores shape vegetative communities via numerous mechanisms, including browse. We used vegetation monitoring data from Isle Royale National Park to examine woody species change across a nine‐year interval, coinciding with herbivore escalation. Here, moose and snowshoe hare are the dominant herbivores, while the gray wolf is the apex predator. Our initial sampling period (2010) followed six years of low moose abundance, while our second sampling event (2019) followed a nine‐year escalation in moose density. We tested for change in both saplings and shrubs and compared diameter size distributions of common tree species in three island sections. We found a decline in large saplings of sugar maple, a species limited to the west section of the island. We also saw declines in small saplings of sugar maple, paper birch, and trembling aspen. For some species, including black spruce and white spruce, taxa that are unpalatable to moose, diameter distributions were proportionally larger (i.e., indicative of fewer small individuals) in 2019 than in 2010. In contrast, diameter distributions of black ash in the central section and trembling aspen in the central and east sections of the island were proportionally smaller (indicative of more small individuals) in 2019 than in 2010. We found that ~50% of common shrub taxa were more abundant during the second sampling event, while none declined. Our work here brings to light several unanticipated results. While we demonstrated partial recovery of trembling aspen, likely originating during the earlier period of low moose abundance, our results suggest further changes may be attributable to other island herbivores. The response of black ash, a hydric species, may be stemming from a sixfold increase in active beaver sites, while that of spruce may be attributable to a historic spike in snowshoe hare density. We currently have only a limited understanding of the impacts of the island's lesser studied herbivores on overstory regeneration. Quaking aspen (Populus tremuloides Michx.) has high conservation value on the southwestern edge of its range, which extends from the southwestern United States (i.e. Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas) to central Mexico. This value is driven by aspen's ecological importance, positive impact on local economies, and aesthetic and cultural values. Generally, the scant aspen populations that remain in the Southwest lack resilience and adaptive capacity, and managers are unsure how best to maintain the species in an uncertain future. This systematic review seeks to address that need by reviewing existing literature from the Southwest on which biotic and abiotic factors influence aspen forest dynamics and by synthesizing that literature with a discussion of how management can promote aspen ecosystem resilience and adaptive capacity. We found that fire and silvicultural treatments promote aspen regeneration, but chronic ungulate browse inhibits recruitment. Moreover, drought is a driver of overstory mortality and has a negative influence on recruitment. In the second half of this review, we propose three management objectives for increasing aspen resilience and adaptive capacity: (1) promote diversity in age structure, (2) mitigate ungulate impacts, and (3) enhance complexity. We consider how various management strategies could meet these objectives and highlight potential threats to aspen forest health and resilience. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background and Aims At the population level, genetic diversity is a key determinant of a tree species' capacity to cope with stress. However, little is known about the relative importance of the different components of genetic diversity for tree stress responses. We compared how two sources of genetic diversity, genotype and cytotype (i.e. differences in ploidy levels), influence growth, phytochemical and physiological traits of Populus tremuloides in the presence and absence of environmental stress. Methods In a series of field studies, we first assessed variation in traits across diploid and triploid aspen genotypes from Utah and Wisconsin under non-stressed conditions. In two follow-up experiments, we exposed diploid and triploid aspen genotypes from Wisconsin to individual and interactive drought stress and defoliation treatments and quantified trait variations under stress. Key Results We found that (1) tree growth and associated traits did not differ significantly between ploidy levels under non-stressed conditions. Instead, variation in tree growth and most other traits was driven by genotypic and population differences. (2) Genotypic differences were critical for explaining variation of most functional traits and their responses to stress. (3) Ploidy level played a subtle role in shaping traits and trait stress responses, as its influence was typically obscured by genotypic differences. (4) As an exception to the third conclusion, we showed that triploid trees expressed 17 % higher foliar defence (tremulacin) levels, 11 % higher photosynthesis levels and 23 % higher rubisco activity under well-watered conditions. Moreover, triploid trees displayed greater drought resilience than diploids as they produced 35 % more new tissue than diploids when recovering from drought stress. Conclusion Although ploidy level can strongly influence the ecology of tree species, those effects may be relatively small in contrast to the effects of genotypic variation in highly diverse species. Populus and Salix species (Salicaceae) are widely distributed, either naturally or on plantations, in different regions of the world. Salicaceae species usually establish beneficial mutualistic associations with arbuscular mycorrhizal and ectomycorrhizal fungi, which can be used as biotechnological tools. In this work, a review of all studies published between 2010 and 2020 that addressed the occurrence of mycorrhizae in Populus and Salix was carried out using the Mendeley platform, in order to highlight its importance in the last decade and on a global scale. A total of 100 publications were reviewed, 77 on Populus, 17 on Salix, and six dealing with species of both genera. The finding that a higher number of studies were focused on Populus could be related with a higher interest in these species, since they have higher commercial value as compared to Salix species. The most studied hybrid species were Populus tremuloides, P. deltoides, Salix dasyclados and S. caprea. Ninety-seven percent of studies were carried out in the northern hemisphere, possibly because it corresponds to the natural distribution area of these species. The number of studies concerning the independent analyses of arbuscular mycorrhizae (42) and ectomycorrhizae (45) was similar, and only a few addressed both mycorrhizal types simultaneously. Based on our results, two main research gaps were identified: 1) the study of mycorrhizae in Salicaceae species in the southern hemisphere, and 2) the simultaneous study of arbuscular mycorrhizae and ectomycorrhizae in Salicaceae worldwide.
